Common questions

How can I start using the extension?

Once you install the extension in your browser, open app.notion.com and click on the Extensions icon in the toolbar. Click on Notion Customizer, and customize away! You can pin Notion Customizer to your browser’s toolbar for easier access.

Can I use the extension in the Notion app?

Notion Customizer works only in a browser, not the Notion app. I recommend a Chromium-based browser (e.g., Google Chrome, Arc), as some other browsers (e.g., Firefox) don’t load Notion as fast or allow certain functionality like cell copying/pasting.

If you want to use the extension while replicating the experience of a dedicated Notion app, you can use one browser exclusively for Notion pages, rename the app “Notion,” and change the app logo to Notion’s. I use Vivaldi; it’s fast and minimal.

How does the word count tracker work?

The word counter appears in the top bar on every page, displaying an accurate count of the words in the current page. It counts all visible words, meaning any words collapsed under toggle headings aren’t counted. If you’ve written (or deleted) any words today, the change in word count is displayed alongside the total. You can click either number to copy it to your clipboard—useful for those of us who track our writing sessions.

Notion has a built-in page word count, but it’s hidden in a menu and is weirdly inaccurate.

What browsers does the extension work in?

Currently, Notion Customizer is available on the Chrome Web Store, where you can download it for any Chromium-based browser—like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, or Arc.

I may eventually launch a version compatible with other kinds of browsers, like Safari or Firefox. Let me know if that’s something you’d use.
